End of Module Evaluation

1. What skills have you developed through this module and how effectively do you think you have applied them?

I have once again developed my screenprinting skills and have applied them too three of my briefs to produce a good outcome. I have also started to think about effective ways to create positive outcomes for my work. Instead of just screenprinting I have effectively thought about it and mixed digital with screenprint which has produced some good outcomes that I am pleased with.

2. What approaches to/methods of research have you developed and how have they informed your design development process?

I have been on two visits down to London, I have emailed and interviewed five designers that use screenprint as the predominant medium and I have picked up leaflets, stocks etc. I always keep a large bookmark of designers and agency's that I love. These all inform my work all the time and they will forever. I think looking at contemporary practice all the time does help and does inform peoples designs.

3. What strengths can you identify in your work and how have/will you capitalize on these?

I have learned that organization and a system for working helps and during the last two briefs I used these systems and organizations and they were easily the most productive briefs that I completed. Everything from start to finish worked and the crits we had just helped push them along a bit more.

So the way I structure and organize my briefs in future will follow the same pattern so I can get the most done and the best results in the best amount of time.

4. What weaknesses can you identify in your work and how will you address these more fully?

Research is a big hole in my work. I can never seem to get enough meaningful research i.e. visits, interviews etc. Looking at contemporary designers and agencys is my main body of research and although it is massively informative and helpful, it isn’t sold enough as going out there and capitalizing on people as I so easily can.

5. Identify five things that you will do differently next time and what do you expect to gain from doing these?

• Be more thorough in my use of medium choice
• Identify areas where effective outcome was produced
• In-depth research
• Generate more ideas
• Develop solutions further

6.How would you grade yourself on the following areas:
(please indicate using an ‘x’)

5= excellent, 4 = very good, 3 = good, 2 = average, 1 = poor

Attendance - 4
Punctuality - 4
Motivation - 5
Commitment - 4
Quantity of work produced - 4
Quality of work produced - 4
Contribution to the group - 4

Actionaid in Context

Aswell as the pack that are given out with the posters in, this is just a little something that would advertise the campaign to give a fiver a month. It would catch peoples eyes in places like this and would also be given out and posted to everyone.

Art of Music Context

This is part of the exhibition where the posters would idealy be exhibited. The packs would also be sold off to people including the posters that they have seen at the show.

Bollocks to Poverty pack

I made the pack for Bollocks to Poverty! I used a 7" vinyl sleeve again, but cut it down to size so that my posters can fit into it. The posters are a little smaller than A3. I had to open it up and construct it myself which gave it a little rougher edge than usual, but it looks really good an Im pleased with the outcome. The stock is perfect for a charity breif because it is 100% recycled and pulped. So that is wy I chose it.

I tried to find a different way to print onto the front instead of screenprint, partly because of time and partly because I wanted to try someting different. I basically created an outline and got the die cutter to cut out a Bollocks to Poverty! logo. Then I had the pain-steaking task of pulling out the letters and putting on masking tape to pull it off and out it back on evenly. I had to make the masking tape tacky by sticking it to my arm a few times so that it wouldn't fully stick to the sticker.

All in all I am very happy with the outcome and it looks a hell of a lot better not on a camera phone.

Bollocks to Poverty Ideas

These are two more ideas that I played with. Not many people got the fact that the banner was to show a support and a security for the countries that actionaid support. So I tried it with a silhouette but it just looked awful. I also tried using some of the images from the actionaid pack. The whole idea of y brief is that it doesn't make people feel guilty for not giving to charity. So the idea of using a big photo of someone less off is a stupid one.

I forgot to point something out:

ACTIONAID CHANGED THE BRIEF AND ITS MANDATORIES HALFWAY THROUGH ME COMPLETING THE BRIEF. IT IS ASKING FOR NEW FONTS, PHOTO'S AND COLOURS SO I AM GOING TO COMPLETE IT MY WAY AND SUBMIT IT TO YCN FOR THE COMPETITION.

Bollocks to Poverty - Poster 3

After my crit, I was told that three lines is better than one, so I have eliminated one line and put a 5 and £ sign in it. The banner is supposed to represent a kind of security for the country that is being given charity too. It is also a kind of fly the flag motif if that makes any sense.

I tried an idea where a little country icon (Africa) is being wrapped around by the banner, but it did not work. Pics of that after the jump.

The Art of Music - Sleeves

I tried screen printing the sleeves for that brief. I realsed once I printed them that the small detail at the bottom was a bit too small, so I am going to enlarge them and re-print all three.

This has made me realize that small detail is real hard to get perfect when screen printing.
